At the heart of the Keiskamma Art Project are the many artists who have spent years of their lives producing these monumental and influential works. The exhibition is testimony to the determination, ingenuity and creativity of these women, whose artworks offer a critique of history, highlight contemporary social injustices, and tell a story of shared humanity. They also play an important part in drawing attention to the social complexities and challenges of our country, South Africa, within a global context.
In appreciating the work of the Keiskamma Art Project created over twenty years, it is important to acknowledge those who have bought or commissioned Keiskamma artworks to help ensure the sustainability of the Project. Artists, teachers and researchers who have been inspired by their collaborations with the artists or who have closely studied their iconic works also deserve mention. Below are names of all those from Hamburg and its surrounds who have been part of the Project since its inception, and also names of the wider collective of supporters, friends, teachers, researchers and partners.

Keiskamma Our South Africa Tapestries
2022
3 appliqué and embroidery pieces
0.5 m x 0.5 m
Keiskamma Trust, Hamburg,
Eastern Cape
In October 2021 Keiskamma Art Project ran a workshop to make up a limited edition tapestry series to raise funds for the retrospective, Umaf’ evuka, nje ngenyanga / Dying and rising, as the moon does. After discussing the country’s violent colonial and apartheid history, their daily challenges as women from an impoverished area of the Eastern Cape, and their hopes for the future, the artists created a visual interpretation of the fundamental rights enshrined in our Constitution – rights to equality, freedom and human dignity. These personal visions were then translated into drawings, which the artists consolidated into three main compositions to be transferred onto linen in preparation for embroidery. The finished tapestries, richly coloured and intricately detailed, together make up a symbolic narrative of possibility for a country at a critical point in its history. Individually, the tapestries represent an intimate expression of personal hopes and dreams, manifested stitch by stitch.
Thank you to all the donors and buyers for supporting this campaign. We were thrilled to have sold all the limited editions.

With profound gratitude to the Judith Neilson Foundation, whose generous support for the Keiskamma Art Project has made this catalogue possible.

The Keiskamma Trust was established in 2000 in the village of Hamburg, Eastern Cape, with the vision of ‘building healthy communities in all respects’. Working holistically to achieve this led to the establishment of four main programmes, namely Art, Music, Education and Health. Each programme has its own management team, set of specific goals and practical means of achieving them. Together, their effects are felt in the social and political landscape of Hamburg.
