Umhlaba omtsha

Veronica Betani:

"This is Carol Hofmeyr’s artwork, A New Earth. What I can say about this artwork, is that it symbolises how long, long ago there was maybe a time when there was no sickness, no illness, there was no fighting, there was no environmental pollution. Everything was just fine.

Where we see the two angels at the top, I think it shows that God is very angry with the people causing destruction and he is sending the angels to give us a message, to save us from the hell we are creating on earth. So the piece is about resurrection. I think that it's a cry for resurrection, a cry to be resurrected. And to keep everything that we have and not to lose it but to restore it to the way it was before. It is as if we are pleading to God that we can go back to life how it was in the beginning.

If you look at the artwork, then you see a small thing that is down there, like someone who's going to be buried. The artwork seems to be saying we must take that body and let it enrich the soil to bring back our lost humanity. Instead of killing each other, we have to love each other and restore greenness to the barren world: resurrect it. We need to make life enjoyable again, for what is happening here on this earth now is not good for us.

So, we wish to create Umhlaba Omtsha—a new earth, a resurrected earth—and go back to a joyful life, a liveable life.
