botanicals

Inspired by Austrian-born architect, artist and designer Josef Frank’s botanical prints, composed between 1920 and 1950, this is a series of tapestries depicting indigenous flora in and around Hamburg. Frank famously argued that design should embrace the variety inherent in nature as well as in humanity. Botanicals show the Keiskamma artists’ intimate knowledge of the local indigenous plants, including many medicinal varieties and some endangered species. These intricately embroidered pieces bring into view the artists’ reverential relationship towards their natural environment. Together they reveal the beauty of the local flora, their importance in indigenous herbal medicine and their essential part in the ebb and flow of life on the planet.
