marriage of nolulama and luthando

Marriage of Nolulama and Luthando celebrates young people’s ability to return to a normal life after years of debilitating illness during the worst period of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Nolulama and Luthando met in the first HIV/AIDS treatment centre in Hamburg and subsequently married. They were two of the earliest patients in the Hamburg community to receive antiretroviral (ARV) treatment and regain their health. Made by members of the Keiskamma Art Project in classes with visual artist Marialda Marais, who offered formal art training to the artists for over ten years, the acrylic paintings around the central figures were inspired by the stories of elderly people from the community who had tragically lost their children to AIDS.
