our sacred ocean

Our Sacred Ocean spans generations in its collection of stories and memories from the Hamburg region around what the ocean means. Not only is the ocean a rich source of food and livelihoods, it is believed to be sacred, a place where the ancestors still reside. It is a place where people come to pray, to hold traditional ceremonies, to mend broken hearts, to connect to centuries of ancestral wisdom, and to heal. The water from the ocean is the community’s medicine. The ocean lies at the heart of the well-being of communities along the Eastern Cape coast.
